ما أمامك ليس تلاً. إنه أحد عشر ألف عام من بلدة تنهار ويُعاد بناؤها على أنقاضها، ثلاث وعشرون طبقة استيطان، حتى صار ركام الحياة اليومية تضاريس. والبرج الحجري في الجهة الغربية هو المذهل: ثمانية أمتار ونصف ارتفاعاً، بناه حوالي سنة ٨٠٠٠ قبل الميلاد قوم بلا معدن ولا فخار ولا كتابة. وهو أقدم بناء ضخم معروف صنعه البشر، ولا أحد يتفق على وظيفته: دفاع أم صد فيضان أم تقويم أم إعلان. وأنت هنا على عمق مئتين وخمسين متراً تحت سطح البحر، ما يجعلها أوطأ مدن الأرض وأقدمها معاً.
The mound in front of you is not a hill. It is eleven thousand years of one town collapsing and being rebuilt on its own rubble, twenty-three separate settlement layers, until the accumulated debris of daily life became topography. The stone tower on the western side is the astonishing thing: eight and a half metres high, built around 8000 BCE by people with no metal, no pottery and no writing. It is the oldest known monumental structure made by humans and nobody agrees what it was for — defence, flood control, a calendar, a statement. You are two hundred and fifty metres below sea level, which makes this the lowest city on earth as well as the oldest.
أريحا بالعربية، وفي اسمها قراءتان قديمتان تتنافسان: من الكنعانية يَرِيح أي القمر، ما يوحي بمعبد قمري، أو من الرِّيح أي العطر، نسبة إلى بساتين البلسم والنخيل التي أثرت الواحة. وهي أقدم مدينة مأهولة بلا انقطاع على الأرض، ومسماة إما على القمر وإما على رائحتها.
Jericho is Ariha in Arabic. Two readings compete and both are old: from the Canaanite Yareah, the moon, suggesting a lunar shrine; or from rih, fragrance, for the balsam and date groves that made the oasis rich. The city is the oldest continuously inhabited place on earth and it is named either for the moon or for how it smells.
