وُلد في قرية الشجرة قرب طبريا، وصار لاجئاً في العاشرة في مخيم عين الحلوة بلبنان. كان يرسم على جدران المخيم. فرأى غسان كنفاني الرسوم ونشرها. وعلى مدى خمسة وعشرين عاماً رسم نحو أربعين ألف كاريكاتير يهاجم فيها الاحتلال والحكومات العربية والقيادة الفلسطينية بالشهية نفسها، ولذلك كان له أعداء في كل جهة. أُطلق عليه الرصاص في لندن سنة ١٩٨٧ ولم يستعد وعيه.
Born in the village of Al-Shajara near Tiberias, a refugee at ten in Ain al-Hilweh camp in Lebanon. He drew on the camp walls. Ghassan Kanafani saw the drawings and published them. Over twenty-five years he made some forty thousand cartoons, attacking Israeli occupation, Arab governments and the Palestinian leadership with equal appetite, which is why he had enemies on every side. He was shot in London in 1987 and never regained consciousness.

His character Handala is a ten-year-old with his back turned and his hands clasped — ten because that was al-Ali's age when he left, and turned away because al-Ali said the boy would show his face only when the refugees went home.
