وُلد في عكا، وكان في الثانية عشرة سنة ١٩٤٨، وصار لاجئاً بعدها: لبنان ثم دمشق حيث درّس في مدرسة للأونروا وبدأ يكتب ليشرح تلاميذه لأنفسهم. وروايته القصيرة رجال في الشمس تتبع ثلاثة فلسطينيين يُهرَّبون إلى الكويت داخل خزان ماء فارغ عبر الصحراء. ونهايتها من أكثر الفقرات جدلاً في الأدب العربي. قُتل بسيارة مفخخة في بيروت وعمره ست وثلاثون.
Born in Acre, twelve years old in 1948, and a refugee thereafter — Lebanon, then Damascus, where he taught in a UNRWA school and started writing to explain his students to themselves. His short novel 'Men in the Sun' follows three Palestinians being smuggled to Kuwait inside an empty water tanker across the desert. Its ending is one of the most argued-over paragraphs in Arabic literature. He was killed by a car bomb in Beirut at thirty-six.

He drew too. His pen-and-ink illustrations for his own stories are held in archives and are as spare and hard as the prose.
